Over the past few weeks we’ve been exploring the world of marketing and entrepreneurship. We’ve all spent hours developing business plans, conducting market research, designing creative products and preparing advertisements. There was a lot of build-up and excitement as Entrepreneur Fair drew closer! That excitement took a nose dive however on our first day of the fair; we didn’t get the sales that we expected. We needed to keep our heads afloat and reflect on what we could do to increase sales. Entrepreneurs see challenges as opportunities and find creative ways to solve problems. Our efforts resulted in a successful second day of sales and we are looking forward to counting our money next week. We spent time learning about the key components of quality writing – form, style, meaning and conventions. As a class, we looked at student writing samples and discussed strengths and challenges of the samples. I then modelled how to use the BC Performance Standards to assess writing and we discussed what the specific samples needed in order to meet those expectations. After seeing several modelled examples, students were ready to give it a shot. We looked at a writing sample as a class and then students discussed and assessed the sample in pairs before sharing back with the class. It was clear students were getting it! We then broke into small groups to share and discuss our short story drafts and use the Performance Standards to give meaningful, descriptive feedback to our peers. That feedback helped us clearly identify what we needed to work on in order to develop our writing. Next week we will work on making revisions. Playland + classmates = loads of fun!! It was a memorable end to our week!!
