February 28, 2018 was Pink Shirt Day! Check out how many of us are choosing to practise kindness today…and every day. Let’s put an end to bullying.

It was First Peoples in Residence week – a week that involves the sharing of Indigenous knowledge and traditions. We loved watching Pow-wow dancer Shyama-Priya perform before learning a few steps ourselves and we loved hearing BC Metis author David Bouchard share stories, songs and teachings of the medicine wheel. It was a great week of learning.
Our field trip to Science World was a highlight of the week for many of us. We loved exploring the different exhibits and using design thinking while creating turbines to turn wind energy into electrical energy in the Tinker Lab.
Lots of memories created. Lots of learning took place. Thanks Science World :) It was a busy and exciting week in division 7. Our excitement for the Olympics has been building and this week we learned about the official mascots of the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympic games and their significance to the host country, South Korea. After hearing a little bit about Soohorang and Bandabi (and before seeing any photos!), we then predicted what we thought they would look like! We also practised note-taking while doing some research about a Canadian athlete participating in this year’s Winter Olympics. We needed to include five facts and a challenge that the athlete has had to face. We also wrote and sent messages to the athletes to wish them good luck!! Lastly, to mark the start of the Games we had our own Olympic opening ceremony in our gym that even included a torch relay! To show our spirit we wore Olympic colours and medals that we made in class. Now let the games begin! We had a visit this week from the Planetarium’s Space Lab and were totally fascinated by what we saw thanks to Polaris and the digital portable planetarium. It allowed us to explore space – including the constellations, planets, and the moon. We loved seeing how the position of the sun creates daylight and darkness at the same time depending on where you are on Earth and learning how in order to exist in space you need water. We were curious and want to know more…stay tuned for term 3 :) Last but not least, Wednesday was Global Play Day is a day promoting the importance of regular, unstructured play - no screens, no devices – just play. It was an opportunity for us to build our Core Competencies as we generate & share ideas, show creativity, solve problems and work collaboratively while playing board games, building with Lego/K’nex or making Valentine’s Day cards. Curious about the value of play in schools? Click here to learn more. :)
We’ve been doing some great thinking in Math this week as we practised skip-counting, repeated addition and making equal “groups of” different numbers. To help build a strong conceptual understanding of multiplication, we’ve used unifix cubes to make lots of equal groups and played several different games – our favourite: Yahtzee, a game filled with multiplication! It's basketball season! Basketball is a fast-paced game that involves lots of different locomotor and movement skills, including dribbling, shooting, passing, and jumping. To develop our skills, we’ve been designing drills that we will give to classmates who have a variety of different skill levels. Part of this involves giving specific feedback to peers to help them improve. We were excited to get a letter in the mail inviting us to participate in the Great Canadian Mail Race. After having so much fun sending and receiving postcards during the Global Read Aloud last fall, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to participate. A great way to practice letter writing! We all wrote letters to other grade 4 students in hopes of getting a response. The student who receives the first letter back wins! The 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang are less than a week away! We had fun learning about the meaning of the Olympic rings. We knew that the five rings represented continents, but we didn’t realize that the interconnectedness of those rings represents the union of athletes around the world. We also didn’t realize how hard it is to make your own interconnected Olympic rings! We did a great job helping each other and giving it our best shot :)
