Our last week before the winter break was filled with some great learning...and lots of fun! The festive spirit continued as we made nutcracker Christmas ornaments and learned about Hanukkah. We read a picture book: Is it Hanukkah yet? and made connections to the story. We gathered lots of fascinating information about biomes last week and this week we learned how to use Office 365 Sway to share our learning. Before getting started we got some helpful tips on how Sway works and then we signed into our Office 365 Education accounts and began experimenting. We inserted text and images into sections called cards and then played around with the design. We loved the “remix!” button that randomly changed the design. There were so many different options! After having fun playing around on Sway, we were ready to focus on using it to share information about our biomes. We were introduced to Ozobots this week - miniature robots that are loads of fun!! Ozobots travel along a pathway and follow special colour sequences that they encounter along the way. The colour sequences are codes that the Ozobot can understand…so when it sees blue green red, for example, it will go its fastest speed for 3 seconds while flashing green and white before returning to its cruising speed. We loved using codes while mapping out paths for the Ozobots to follow. It was tricky at first, but we learned so much simply by making mistakes. We've tested our paths and have shared, revised and retested. It’s been great to see the excitement and the perseverance. One of the last things we did this week was Christmas cards for police officers working on Christmas Day. It was a great way for us to show gratitude and kindness in the community, and I’m sure they will bring a smile to many faces. Wishing you all a relaxing winter break with your families and looking forward to hearing stories in the new year! Happy New Year!

We’ve been in the festive spirit this week as we prepared for the winter concert. We loved learning how to play “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas” on our recorder and did a great job performing on stage. In Science we were introduced to the wonderful world of biomes through Discovery Ed video clips and picture books. It was fascinating to learn a few facts and to see the differences – giving us great background information. We then worked in groups to brainstorm and record good questions or “I wonder” statements to use in our biome inquiry. Here are a few that we came up with:
In math we’ve been building our number sense while using Base 10 Blocks to add 3-digit numbers. Using manipulatives is important in Math because it helps build our conceptual understanding. To share our learning, we recorded videos. Here was our learning intention and criteria: Learning Intention: I can use Base 10 Blocks to find the sum of two three-digit numbers Criteria: -My question involves regrouping -I explain how to find the sum -I use Math vocabulary (e.g. Base 10 Blocks, sum, regroup, ones, tens, hundreds) -I speak clearly We read Metis Christmas Mittens by Leah Marie Dorion and learned about the Metis tradition of making mittens for loved ones. Those mittens warm the hands and the heart :). Check out the mittens we drew using oil pastels. One more week til winter break! Can you believe it?!? Time flies! 🎄🎄🎄
