This week, we continued to make informed opinions on “hot topics”. Our first practice activity involved a topic choice: “Is it fair to ban people from 7 nations from entering the US?” Or “should cell phones be allowed in schools?” We were able to access several secondary sources online (including newspaper articles), but we needed to remember to be open-minded while we considered different perspectives. Identifying our values was much easier after having already practised last week. We realized that many of us share common values - such as respect, fairness and choice – that we used when forming our opinion. Our second practice activity was in response to an article about tobogganing – is it a winter sport or an illegal activity? We shared our opinions on our blog posts. This week we were the focus class in our quadblog, so we had students from thee different schools (located in the UK, Illinois and Washington) reading and leaving comments on our blog posts. Our class received over 200 comments!! We loved seeing that even though we are located in different parts of the world, we share many common interests – playing sports, baking, shopping, Star Wars and playing video games. Who knew? There was one exception, however: Birdhouse construction underway! A slow and steady task that Is making us see the value of power tools :) We took part in the 3rd annual Global School Play Day and had an afternoon of simple, unstructured play (no screens, no devices, no structure). In our busy lives filled with devices of all shapes and sizes, we overlook the benefits of play. It was a fun hour filled with all sorts of different activities – playing games, building with Lego, and drawing. Great fun! Curious about the value of play in schools? Click here to learn more.
