The American Bullfrog. An invasive species that will take over and eat just about anything they can get their hands on, including other frogs, baby turtles, ducks insects, salmon, birds, and snakes. They will even resort to eating other bullfrogs! And we were even more shocked to find out that these alien invaders exist in BC! After reading a newspaper article and non-fiction text orally and watching news clips, we discovered that American Bullfrogs are causing a lot of local ecological damage, but not much is being done to stop the spread of such an invasive species. We learned about a herpetologist, Stan Orchard, and his efforts to control/manage the bullfrog population in Victoria, but we really wanted more information (such as how many bullfrogs are in local waters? and does the provincial government help fund your efforts?) before forming opinions on whether or not bullfrogs need to be managed. Although we sent tweets out to multiple secondary sources to try to get our questions answered, but we didn’t have any luck. Instead of relying on twitter, we instead decided to email Stan Orchard directly at bullfrogcontrol.com and he quickly responded with answers to our questions! We’ve got more that we’d like to ask, so we’re hoping to be able to Skype with Mr. Orchard next week. Fingers crossed! We’ve continued learning about mental health and have “zoomed in” to focus on 5 specific mental illnesses, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Thankfully we had helpful brochures thanks to the Canadian Mental Health Association so that we had access to information to find out what the illness is, whom it affects and strategies to manage. We were divided into groups to become “experts” on a mental illness and then we did a jigsaw activity and were grouped with students who were experts on other mental illness. By learning facts, it helps us base our opinions on accurate information and will hopefully help us break the stigma around mental illness. Our element superheroes got their final touches this week and we have creative students who gave their elements some pretty impressive personalities!! Prior to starting the assignment we knew that our learning intention was to show that we understand specific properties of an element and that we can show these properties in a creative way. In order to meet the learning intention, we had to follow the specific criteria: Creation Lab got off to a great start again this week. Although we've had access to Lego, Osmos, Squishy Circuits, and MakeyMakeys, we've not yet shared what we've built. And we need to do that!! So this month we'll be doing that. You can see from those photos that we've been exploring and creating. Can you tell we're engaged!?!
