Last week Surrey was blanketed with over 35 cm of snow! We broke records records with snowfall accumulation in February, but also with school closure days. It was a short two-day week. We are about to start a new read aloud novel in class, Walking Home by Eric Walters, that takes place in Kenya. Before we begin reading, it’s important for us to activate our prior knowledge and build our background knowledge. To do so, we reflected on what we already know about Kenya and asked specific questions about the land and challenges faced in Kenya. Building some context helped us make excellent predictions about the story. Looks like it’s time to get started! Since September we’ve been developing our inquiry skills in Science. We’ve been asking questions by using “I wonder” statements, making predictions and finding answers to those questions. In our recent Science investigations, we’ve collaboratively measured and controlled variables in experiments and have observed, measured and recorded qualitative and quantitative data. It’s been exciting to see our thinking and learning evolve in the process. Science Fair is an excellent opportunity to apply these skills, so division 2 will be participating in the district Science Fair. We’ve already brainstormed many different ideas in class and once we’ve officially decided on our inquiry question, we will begin making predictions and hypotheses. We’ll keep you posted!
