We’ve got some great skills in our numeracy toolkits and those skills came in handy this week when we did a problem-solving activity that involved travel planning. Our job was do coordinate a 7-hour schedule for a teen celebrity that included some promotional visits while earning money for charity. We had several things to keep in mind while planning – we needed to include lunchtime, we needed to be to the airport by 4pm (otherwise we’d miss our flight), and we needed to consider travel time between locations. Our goal was to earn as much money as possible in 7 hours. We had a payment chart and a rough map to refer to, but we realized that our best tools were each other! It was helpful to work collaboratively, especially when we needed to keep track of the time and the money earned. We also relied on each other when we needed to use skills that we hadn’t used in awhile – such as adding ¾ of an hour with 1 hour 10 minutes. Applying our numeracy skills while problem-solving helps build our understanding on key concepts…and reminds us that numeracy surrounds us in the real-world. We explored metaphors again this week, but this time in art. We needed to represent our identity using a symbol or metaphor. Many of us were drawn to animals to represent ourselves, but we also had a computer and a soccer ball. We also needed to include a description of how the art represents our personality.
