We had a lot of fun using Google Hangout to connect with a class of grade 4s in Wisconsin. Before we dove into sharing ideas about the book Wild Robot, we spent a few minutes sharing facts about where we’re from. We learned that Wisconsin is located in north central USA, has many lakes, streams and rivers (so they enjoy the outdoors) and that Wisconsin has many dairy farms (they love their cheese). We also gave them a few facts about BC. When it was time to share our ideas about Wild Robot, we noticed that we had a lot of similar ideas – and that they are also working on fully explaining their ideas by explaining why! Who knew that a class so far away would be so similar!?!
Our week got off to a great start with a field trip to Fort Langley. As we explored different parts of the HBC trading post, we got to try on costumes, act out the proclamation of BC, compare fur pelts, watch a live blacksmith demonstration and learn about local items that were traded, including fur, salmon and cranberries. A few highlights were panning for gold and rolling barrels – in the pouring rain! We had a lot of fun using Google Hangout to connect with a class of grade 4s in Wisconsin. While reading Orca Chief and We Live Here: From the Mountains to the Sea, we’ve learned about the First Peoples’ reciprocal relationship with the land. First Peoples believe that we need to take care of the land and to treat everything that’s a part of it with love and respect. In return, the land takes care of us by providing us with resources, including food. That deep connection to land was clear when we looked at the healing Medicine Wheel. The healing Medicine Wheel includes four sacred plants – sage, sweetgrass, cedar, and tobacco, each playing a role in providing healing for the heart and the mind. We then reflected on our own personal connection to the land by looking for pieces of nature that we need in order to feel balanced and to be our best selves.
