We also got to learn about species living in Campbell Valley Park. Although we expected bears to visit the park, we learned that bobcats and coyotes are visitors, as well as many birds, squirrels and rabbits that thrive in the ecosystem. Our guides showed us a taxidermied squirrel and a taxidermied hummingbird and its nest and showed us how to compare leaves of local trees – and to taste the needle of a pine tree. Who knew it would taste like grapefruit?? While there, several students asked excellent questions - why bears don’t visit the park? What impact did the local construction have on the ecosystem in Campbell Valley Park? Great inquiry questions that we need to find answers to.
