After a two-week break, we’re already back into the swing of things in division 7. We started the week with a goal-setting activity that involved something simple: each of us choosing one word to focus on throughout the year. To make it meaningful, we needed to reflect on what we could improve on or what we wanted to start doing. We did some brainstorming and bounced ideas off classmates, but most of us were quick in deciding what we wanted our focus to be. After picking our word, we then took time to write a paragraph explaining why we chose that word and how we will benefit from focusing on it. We also thought of an artistic way to show off our word so that we could display it with our paragraph for others to see. Since September we’ve enjoyed many different kinds of picture books that have had several things in common. They have all had great stories and beautiful pictures, but what else do they have in common? That was a tricky question that really had us thinking. After some thought and discussion, ideas started trickling in. We noticed that the stories all have a moral or lesson in them and that that they all have a beginning, middle and end. They also have a problem, a solution, characters and a setting. We looked for and identified these characteristics in three other picture books with great stories: Mr. Peabody’s Apples, What Matters? and Those Shoes. Learning about common characteristics of stories means that we’ll soon be able to start writing our own. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year!
