"In our class we learned about First Nations traditional animals, clothing and headpieces. There are many important animals for First Nation culture, including the great thunderbird, the great grizzly bear, the wolf and the orca". -MG
"We learned that a totem should not be called a totem pole. It should be called a chief pole because the animals on it represent chiefs. We saw picture of a beaver on a chief pole. The beaver was on it because the chief was busy and hardworking". -HA
"We also learned the chief descendants wore masks and did dances at ceremonies and the wolf taught them that family and sharing are important. We also learned that hereditary chiefs can only be male and that they can be young. They would have adults to guide them". -FH
"With the help of Mrs A., we made wolf headpieces. The traditional colours of coastal nations are red white and black, but as you can see, we also used a few different colours. We are grateful for having many different cultures in our community." -CS

Over the past few weeks we’ve been building a strong conceptual understanding of multiplication as we’ve skip-counted, used repeated addition and made equal “groups of” different numbers. This week we’ve looked for patterns when multiplying by 0, 1 and 10 which helped us find mental math strategies for multiplying by 9, 11 and 2. We discovered that instead of multiplying by 9, we can multiply by 10 and then subtract one group. For example, to find the product of 7 x 9, we can solve 7 x 10 and then subtract one group of 7 (7 x 10 = 70 – 7 = 63). Next week we’ll practise using our mental math strategies while playing Yahtzee, a fun game that involves finding “groups” of single-digit numbers!
