To get started, everyone wrote a question on a cue card in response to the unit inquiry question: “How easy is it to be green?” Our questions got posted on the board and we hope to get them all answered by the end of the unit. We tweeted the city of Surrey to ask Ty’s question: “what happens to our organic waste after it’s picked up?” The city of Surrey responded with helpful information and provided us a link to learn more. A big thank-you to @CityofSurrey!
Last week we used integer tiles to add integers…this week we used them to subtract integers. Many students ask why manipulatives are required, but the answer is simple. We need to understand why (-1) – (-5) equals (+4) and not simply how to solve it. A conceptual understanding is of far greater importance than a procedural one (not easy for a 12 year old to understand!).
