Ice skating and swimming in one week?!? Fun!! One of the Big Ideas in Physical & Health Education involves knowing what physical activities we enjoy and recognizing opportunities to participate in those activities. To learn more about different sports available in our community, we went on two field trips this week to local rec centers. First up was Ice skating. Many of us had never been on the ice before, so although it was challenging, we all had a growth mindset...and kept getting back up and giving it another shot. The awesome part was that most of us loved it and want to go back! Swimming was also lots of fun. We loved the waves! Being active every day is an important part of a healthy lifestyle so we will continue to explore different ways to be active. Over the past few weeks we’ve been building a strong conceptual understanding of multiplication as we’ve skip-counted, used repeated addition and made equal “groups of” different numbers. This week we’ve looked for patterns when multiplying by 0, 1 and 10 which helped us find mental math strategies for multiplying by 9, 11 and 2. We discovered that instead of multiplying by 9, we can multiply by 10 and then subtract one group. For example, to find the product of 7 x 9, we can solve 7 x 10 and then subtract one group of 7 (7 x 10 = 70 – 7 = 63). Next week we’ll practise using our mental math strategies while playing Yahtzee, a fun game that involves finding “groups” of single-digit numbers! We’ve been getting into the spirit of the holidays and this week’s PJ Day and Pancake Breakfast with Santa were definite highlights. To “deck the halls” of our classroom, some of our students led station activities for their peers. Amazing leaders! Awesome decorations! We’ve also been showing our generosity by bringing in non-perishable food items for the food bank. Next week is our Christmas concert and we can't wait to perform!! Lots of great learning in divisions 6 & 7. Hard to believe there are only 2 weeks left before our winter break!!
