We dug deeper into aquaculture because we discovered there’s a lot that we didn’t know. How can we make an informed unbiased opinion on a topic when we have several unanswered questions? We needed to learn more about PCBs, sea lice and chemicals released, but when there’s so much information out there, how can we assure that our information is accurate? One source said that farmed salmon are injected with dye, so to clarify we tweeted @MHCanada to find out answers (Marine Harvest Canada does not inject dye). Thankfully we have found lots of helpful sources that’ve answered questions, including the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Marine Harvest Canada @MHCanada, David Suzuki Foundation. We’ve read interested articles and watched helpful YouTube clips (Thinking and Communication competencies have been busy this week!) Despite all this helpful information, we need to remember that some sources are only going to share facts that they want to share, so we need to mindful of that.
Once we had all formed opinions, we had several excellent class debates. We've got a few more questions lined up for next week. Marine HarvestCanada even offered to directly answer questions, so hopefully that will lead to another interesting discussion.
