One of the Social Studies Curricular Competency key skills involves being able to use scales and legends in maps. Many of us didn’t realize how precise maps are! A scale tells us the exact distance represented by a measurement. By using a ruler to measure the distance between two cities on a map, we can then calculate the actual distance by referring to the graphic scale. Some of us recognized that these calculations involved ratios, equivalent fractions or even one-step algebraic equations!
