Learning about discrimination has been a real eye-opener for many of us. As Canadians, although our basic rights are protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Human Rights Act, we often hear stories in the media of people being treated negatively for reasons such as race, age or disability. To explore discrimination further we heard personal stories while watching different TED talk videos and then compared our rights in Canada to rights in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Uganda and Sudan. We also discussed how discrimination affects us more locally – is our school playground accessible to wheelchairs? Do we have transgender washrooms? To take it one step further we shared personal stories of discrimination and reflected on what we can do to respond to discrimination while writing blog posts. A woman with mobility impairments uses a hand-crank bicycle to move around her village. After 20 years of displacement and war in northern Uganda, women with disabilities - physical, sensory, mental and intellectual - face an even more complex and grueling process of return and relocation than their neighbors. They experience stigma and sexual violence and are often denied access to health care and justice. © 2010 Martina Bacigalupo para Human Rights Watch We're happy to share that our bird houses are finally done!! We hope that local birds - nuthatches, wrens, chickadees and jays - find our shelters in the months to come :)
