Our week got started with a field trip to the H.R. McMillan Space Centre. And what a fun field trip it was! As we sat in the Planetarium Star Theatre, we learned about the moon and the relationship between the Earth, Sun and Moon. We loved seeing how the position of the sun creates daylight and darkness at the same time depending on where you are on Earth. We also learned that the tilt of the Earth’s axis as it rotates around the sun is what creates seasons. Fascinating! In our workshop we used models of the earth and held them up to a lightbulb to explore why the moon looks different at different times of the month. We also had a great discussion about the challenges that animals (and humans!) would face if we didn’t have a moon. It’s interesting that we often overlook how important the moon is! Our Earth Day inquiry has kept us busy over the past few weeks. While researching different perspectives we learned that some of our choices are having a big impact on our environment. We need to protect our Earth so we’ve decided to take action! Some of us have chosen to write letters to companies, including Sun Rype, Minute Maid and Boston Pizza, to voice our opinion and to request that they stop using straws or switch to biodegradable ones. Some of us have written picture books (about the dangers of plastics in the ocean or the effects of removing trees to develop land). A few of us will be giving speeches at our next school assembly. Think of the impact that we could have on our planet! It was an exciting few weeks watching students in divisions 2 & 7 take ownership of the design and painting of the City of Surrey’s new snow plow. Check out how amazing it looks! Our art was inspired by BC artist Roy Henry Vickers. We've been having loads of fun doing gymnastics in PE. It has allowed us to develop and apply a variety of different locomotor (rolling, jumping, hopping, climbing) and non-locomotor (balancing, lifting, stretching, swinging) movement skills.
