We were lucky enough to be invited to participate in chemistry experiments led by grade 11 students. When we arrived at the high school, it was their lunchtime…and there were people everywhere! It was a definite eye opener to see how many people can fit in a small space! We made our way to the classroom where the grade 11s were busy getting their experiments set up. Before the experiments got started we learned about safety techniques and proper use of protective equipment. As soon as we got our lab coats and safety goggles on, the experiments got started. One group observed how soap reacts when it was heated in the microwave. Another group saw what happens when Alka-Seltzer is mixed with vegetable oil and food colouring (looks like a lava lamp!) We even saw a few experiments involve flames (did you know that methyl alcohol and fire can result in green flames?) During the experiments, we made predictions, observations and most of us recorded data. It was an engaging opportunity that was loads of fun. A big thank-you to Mr. E for inviting us to be a part of the experiments. We had loads of fun!
